PS

In our comprehensive testing, Adapt emerges as the superior choice for SMBs prioritizing simple, standalone prospecting capabilities, while Hunter better serves small teams needing some basic email automation built-in.

Adapt's strengths in customer support, contact search capabilities, and data verification make it ideal for companies conducting moderate-volume, targeted outreach campaigns. However, Hunter's inclusion of basic email sequencing and company tracking features makes it more suitable for small teams wanting an all-in-one solution without requiring additional tools. The choice between them largely depends on whether your priority is more comprehensive prospecting capabilities (Adapt) or basic but integrated email automation features (Hunter).

Advantages of Adapt

Adapt offers more comprehensive contact search capabilities
While testing, we found Adapt's contact database to be more extensive than Hunter's web-scraped-only database, particularly for technology sector contacts. Unlike Hunter, Adapt provides robust filtering options including contact seniority, job title, and tenure filters, which are crucial for precise B2B targeting.
Adapt provides superior list building functionality
Adapt's list building features are significantly more advanced than Hunter's basic offering, including capabilities like lead scoring and bulk-saving contacts. While Hunter struggles with basic list creation, Adapt enables sophisticated prospect targeting that's especially valuable for SMBs conducting focused outreach campaigns.

Advantages of Hunter

Hunter is significantly more intuitive for basic prospecting
We found Hunter's minimalist and clean design makes it notably easier to navigate than Adapt's more data-heavy interface. While both tools are user-friendly, Hunter's streamlined approach means new users can master basic prospecting in under 30 minutes, compared to Adapt's slightly steeper learning curve.
Hunter offers better email verification confidence scoring
Hunter provides more granular email verification, giving us detailed accuracy metrics for our outreach campaigns. Adapt uses a simpler binary verification system with green dots.

Adapt is best for

 • Individuals and businesses with moderate prospecting volume (200-1000 leads per month)
 • Who need essential prospecting capabilities like verified contact data and granular filtering, particularly for US-based technology companies
 • And/or who want straightforward list building and CRM integration without complex automation requirements

Hunter is best for

 • Businesses with a low prospecting volume (50-200 leads per month)
 • Who need basic email verification and company research capabilities with minimal automation needs
 • And/or who want an intuitive interface with core CRM integrations but don't require advanced prospecting features

Adapt is less good for

 • Businesses with high prospecting volume (1000-5000 leads per month) requiring deep customization and territory management
 • Who need advanced sales engagement features like native email sequencing and workflow automation
 • And/or who want comprehensive company intelligence with org charts and news tracking capabilities

Hunter is less good for

 • Businesses with high prospecting volume (1000+ leads per month) who need comprehensive contact data beyond just email addresses
 • Who need advanced search capabilities with filters for contact seniority, job title, and company revenue range
 • And/or who need enterprise features like territory management, automated list building, and advanced email engagement tools

Functionality
5

Functionality

5/10

Adapt.io provides all the basic functionality an SMB may need, with extensive contact discovery and company filtering options. Also, it has a chrome extension which allows you to integrate linkedin into your lead search. It offers quite a bit of depth in the US region.

There's a bit less customizability as compared to other tools since you can't add custom fields for contacts and don't have access to company news/context which other tools catering to larger businesses may offer. We would also say that it offers less AI automation as compared to other tools. Also, Adapt would definitely have to be used alongside an email automation tool since it doesn't allow you to send emails natively or set up email sequences.

4

Functionality

4/10

Hunter lacks many core features you'd hope to see from a lead generation platform. When it comes to prospect search, the first hurdle you'll face is the relatively small size of its database - this is due to the fact that they only source emails from public websites and do not cross-reference with any additional data sources. Additionally, many common prospecting filters were missing such as company revenue, contact job title and contact tenure. Finally, adjacent features around email engagement were also light on features meaning you'd likely need to pay separately for a dedicated outbound engagement platform.

Ease of Use

6/10

Hunter's relatively limited feature set means that its web app is intuitive and easy to navigate. Additionally, its onboarding was simple and not overwhelming. However, one drawback is that its contact prospecting interface is non-standard amongst competitors making it harder to pick up. Overall, it would take an average SMB employee a few hours to master its use.

Customisability
5

Customisability

5/10

The web app is customizable such that it allows you to make custom lists and share and save searches, however it may not cater to some options which bigger businesses may be looking for like creating custom fields for contacts or to manage and assign territories. Based on this, Adapt.io seems better suited to smaller SMB's with a moderate prospecting volume.

4

Customisability

4/10

While Hunter offers the ability to create custom lists, it lacks some customisability facets that larger businesses may find helpful. These include the ability to share custom searches with colleagues or to manage and assign territories to specific sales agents.

Ease of Setup
8

Ease of Setup

8/10

Adapt offers a 7-day, self-serve free trial for their platform. When tested, we found the initial setup to be simple (taking <15 mins). Additionally, we found that fully customizing the tool would not take long either given the lack of any native sequencing functionality.
