Salesforce Marketing Editions and AWeber serve distinctly different market segments within the marketing automation space. Salesforce Marketing Editions excels in enterprise-level features with superior customization, detailed segmentation, and robust automation capabilities, making it ideal for large organizations already using Salesforce CRM.

However, its steep learning curve and complex interface make it less suitable for smaller teams or marketing beginners. AWeber, while offering fewer advanced features, provides a more accessible platform with better basic email marketing tools and straightforward integration options, making it more suitable for small to medium-sized businesses or those new to marketing automation.

Advantages of AWeber

Salesforce Marketing Cloud offers superior customization options

The platform excels in customization across analytics, email, and workflow automation. This is particularly valuable for enterprises needing detailed control over their marketing operations. AWeber's customization options are significantly more limited, especially in automation and segmentation.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud provides more robust automation capabilities

The platform offers advanced automation features including conditional events linked to external activities (like webinar attendance), making it much more powerful than AWeber's basic automation tools. This is especially valuable for businesses running complex marketing campaigns.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud is significantly better at customer segmentation

We find Salesforce Marketing Cloud's segmentation capabilities to be particularly valuable for e-commerce businesses, offering detailed tracking of engagement, channels, and consumer health. In contrast, AWeber's basic segmentation capabilities lack custom event-based segmentation and advanced filtering options.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud has superior analytics and reporting

With comprehensive visual dashboards showing engagement history, campaign activities, and user behavior, Salesforce Marketing Cloud significantly outperforms AWeber's basic analytics. This is crucial for data-driven marketing teams.

Functionality
4

Functionality

4/10

AWeber offers some, but not all, of the features that a business might need.

While you can create basic flows and email campaigns with the tool, there are practically no templates for flows, meaning they all have to be built from scratch.

On top of this, there are no Al-enhanced features, advanced segmentation, or surveys - making this a more meagrely kitted out marketing automation customers

8

Functionality

8/10

Salesforce Marketing Editions is a powerful, highly customizable marketing tool with a strong focus on CRM and customer segmentation. It’s a heavyweight platform, packed with features, but leans more toward data-driven marketing than sleek design.

You get the essentials – marketing automation, email marketing, and deep CRM integration – but there are some notable gaps:

No modern, visually polished email templates

No built-in landing page builder

No native SMS sending (SMS requires an integration)

If you need a marketing tool that’s tightly connected to Salesforce and built for segmentation, it delivers. But if design and ease of use matter most, you might find it lacking.

Ease of Use
2

Ease of Use

2/10

AWeber was not particularly easy to pick up. Buttons and key calls to action were hidden in a hamburger menu, adding more clicks to get to basic sections of the program. However, given the simplicity of most of the features, this wasn't a huge issue.

3

Ease of Use

3/10

Salesforce Marketing Editions is not particularly beginner friendly - we'd recommend it to those with previous Salesforce or CRM experience, simply because its marketing automation functions also rely heavily on the same interface.

Look and feel
4

Look and feel

4/10

Overall, AWeber's look and feel is outdated and a little tired. For those who don't mind the old-school look, AWeber could be a good fit. However, for those who want a more delightful interface and user experience, some other marketing platforms would be better options.

6

Look and feel

6/10

While relatively straightforward to navigate, the interface does not deliver delight. This is mostly due to the fact that many buttons and fields feel crowded - unless you know your way around Salesforce software already, this may be hard to wrap your head around.

Customisability
3

Customisability

3/10

AWeber's email automation and customisation system is one of the weaker ones we tested. While its competitors offer robust customisation options, including templates and conditional logic, AWeber loses out on this regard.

9

Customisability

9/10

Salesforce Marketing Editions offers some of the best customisation options we've seen. Specifically, it offers:

Analytics customisation, allowing you to see the key details for key customer segments

Email customisation, based on customer behaviour and traits

Flow customisation, allowing you to build complex and conditional flows.

Ease of Setup
2

Ease of Setup

2/10

While AWeber does have a free trial, which allows you to perform basic setup and product testing, we still found that it was missing a large number of onboarding processes (e.g., tutorials). As such, basic setup takes 1+ hour to complete, and fully customising would take quite a few days.

3

Ease of Setup

3/10

Salesforce Marketing Editions offers a self-serve free trial, but setup takes time – expect at least 45 minutes just to get started.

Even basic tasks, like setting up automations or email campaigns, take more steps than most other marketing platforms, since there are more fields to fill out. Full customization and implementation can stretch to weeks or even months. And, just like with Salesforce CRM, you may need dedicated consultants or technical experts to handle data migration.

Customer Support
7

Customer Support

7/10

Live chat, email support, and help centre articles are available. Live chat isn't 24/7 however - but they serve US hours. Just something to be aware of if you're based in Europe/anywhere else.

8

Customer Support

8/10

Depending on your subscription level, different customer support channels are available.

Phone support is offered to most customers, and live chat is offered to limited segments of customers. Online support (i.e., via email) is always available.

Integratability
7

Integratability

7/10

Most integrations that businesses would need are offered by AWeber - including integrations for CRM, e-commece, lead generation, social media, and more.

5

Integratability

5/10

Salesforce Marketing Editions doesn’t quite live up to Salesforce’s reputation for integrations. While the broader platform connects well with other tools, Marketing Editions has more limitations. If you rely on multiple apps, it’s worth double-checking whether Salesforce Marketing Editions supports the integrations you need before committing.

Ease of Migration
7

Ease of Migration

7/10

As with most marketing automation platforms, AWeber allows you to export your subscriber list. Anything else requires either an API or contacting customer support.

8

Ease of Migration

8/10

Salesforce Marketing Editions offers solid export options – you can easily export contacts as CSV files, as you’d expect.

If you ever need to handle data portability requests for compliance reasons, Salesforce Marketing Editions provides a clear process for exporting all customer-related information, making it easier to stay on top of data protection requirements.
