Bordio and Jira serve distinctly different needs in the project management space. Bordio excels as a lightweight, user-friendly tool perfect for small teams seeking simplicity and immediate productivity, with its standout ease of use and clean interface.

However, it falls short on customization, integrations, and advanced features. Jira, while more complex to learn, offers powerful customization, extensive integrations, and sophisticated automation capabilities, making it better suited for larger teams, particularly in software development, who need advanced project management features and can invest time in setup and training.

Advantages of Bordio

Bordio is significantly easier to use than Jira
We find Bordio offers an exceptionally intuitive experience with virtually no learning curve, making it ideal for teams that need to get started quickly. In contrast to Jira's complex interface and steep learning curve, Bordio's minimalist approach means teams can begin using it effectively immediately.
Bordio has a cleaner, more modern interface than Jira
Bordio's interface is simple but attractive, with effective use of color coding for different task types. While Jira's interface feels dated and can be slow to load, Bordio maintains a clean, modern aesthetic that enhances user experience.

Advantages of Jira

Jira is vastly superior at task dependencies and relationships
We found Jira's task dependency system to be exceptionally well-designed, with bidirectional relationships visible on cards and other views. This makes it easy to understand complex project dependencies, which Bordio completely lacks. For teams managing interconnected tasks, like when engineering work depends on design completion, Jira's robust dependency tracking is invaluable.
Jira offers significantly more powerful automation capabilities
While Bordio offers no automation features beyond basic recurring tasks, Jira provides sophisticated automation templates that can handle complex workflows. Teams can automate repetitive admin tasks and standardize workflows, such as automatically closing parent issues when child tasks are completed or creating Git branches when tasks move to 'in progress'.
Jira's customization capabilities far exceed Bordio's
Jira's customization options are vastly more extensive than Bordio's basic features. Teams can create multiple task types with unique fields, set up sophisticated workflows with validation rules, and establish multi-level task hierarchies. Bordio, in contrast, offers only basic customizations like color-coding and simple custom fields.
Jira has superior integration capabilities
Jira's integration ecosystem is significantly more robust than Bordio's single Google Calendar integration. With a thriving app marketplace and extensive API support, Jira can connect with virtually any tool in your tech stack. This makes it much more versatile for teams using multiple tools.

Bordio is best for

  • Businesses with a low number of active projects (3-5 projects at a time)
  • Who need basic task tracking with time management capabilities and want an extremely easy-to-use interface
  • And/or who want collaborative document creation through notes and need minimal integrations beyond Google Calendar

Jira is best for

  • Businesses with a high number of active projects (10+ projects at a time)
  • Who need the ultimate customisation and powerful workflow automation
  • And/ or software development teams who want comprehensive Agile features

Bordio is less good for

  • Businesses with a moderate number of active projects (5-10 projects at a time) who need portfolio management capabilities and advanced project tracking
  • Who need extensive workflow automation and custom integrations beyond basic Google Calendar sync
  • And/or who need advanced project visualization tools like Gantt charts, timelines, and customizable dashboards for reporting

Jira is less good for

  • Businesses with a low number of active projects (3-5 projects at a time)
  • Who need simple task management without complex workflows

Stackfix Verdict
Functionality
5

Functionality

5/10

<p>Bordio is a minimalist project management tool. In line with this it doesn't offer a large suit of functionality. It lacks task dependencies and some basic automation which we would expect from this kind of tool. However, the time-tracking, internal documents and task management tools are all strong.</p>
9

Functionality

9/10

<p>Jira delivers nearly all the functionality that SMBs—and even enterprises—will need.</p><p>Its task and project management capabilities are incredibly powerful and flexible. You can customize Jira to fit virtually any project, even those with complex structures like five layers of sub-tasks, each with their own custom fields.</p><p>That said, Jira does have some gaps. It doesn’t natively offer features like invoicing, billing, or expense tracking, which other tools sometimes include. Plus, for built-in docs or wikis, you’ll need to use its sister product, Confluence.</p>
Ease of Use
9

Ease of Use

9/10

<p>There really isn't a learning curve with Bordio - it is exceptionally easy to use. We imagine any person could start using this tool effectively right from the word go!</p><p><br></p><p>All key processes are easy and intuitive to locate.</p>
4

Ease of Use

4/10

<p>Compared to other project management tools, we find Jira complex to navigate. The interface is packed with features and options, which can make it overwhelming and unintuitive—especially for new users. The learning curve is steep, and it can take weeks for team members to get fully comfortable.</p><p>For example, even for simple projects, there are multiple configuration pages to manage: settings for the entire project, specific project views, built-in fields, custom fields—you name it. It’s powerful, but all these layers can quickly become confusing.</p>
Look and feel
8

Look and feel

8/10

<p>Bordio has a simple but attractive view. It nicely utilises colour coding of each task depending of the 'type' of task it is (e.g. all hiring-related tasks are appear with a green background).</p>
5

Look and feel

5/10

<p>While Jira has made strides in design and usability with recent updates, it still feels a bit dated compared to more modern Project Management tools like Linear. Customizing the UI is pretty limited, so you’re mostly stuck with the default look and feel.</p><p>Our main gripe, though, is page load times. At 2–3+ seconds per page, things can feel sluggish—and this gets gets compounded as your projects and teams grow. It's a frustration that can niggle you every day.</p>
Customisability
2

Customisability

2/10

<p>Bordio lacks any more complex customisations. There are no automations to customise and no custom reports. However, there are some more simple, but useful customisations. These include colour-coding different types of tasks and adding custom fields and tags to each task. When creating internal documents you can also add checklists, links and add pictures from your device.</p>
10

Customisability

10/10

<p>We find Jira to be impressively, and overwhelmingly, customisable.</p><p>You can customise almost anything you can think of - custom task types, workflows, specialized screens, validation rules, and more. For ultimate flexibility, there’s even Jira’s own query language (JQL), which lets you search and filter issues with incredible precision.</p>
Ease of Setup
9

Ease of Setup

9/10

<p>Bordio is fantastically easy to set up. It doesn't require talking to sales and full setup will likely take less than 30 minutes.</p>
4

Ease of Setup

4/10

<p>Jira offers a self-serve free trial and lets you purchase without dealing with sales. Getting started and setting up a few tasks or subtasks takes about 30–40 minutes, which can feel a bit more confusing compared to other tools. That said, its rich library of templates helps streamline the process.</p><p>Be prepared, though—a full setup will likely take at least a few days, especially if you’re customizing it for more complex workflows.</p>
Customer Support
4

Customer Support

4/10

<p>There is personalised email support which are friendly and helpful. Replies usually take less than a day. You will also receive an email when you first get the platform asking if you have an questions or wish to schedule an onboarding meeting.</p><p><br></p><p>Self-serve materials are thin and not of great quality. This being said, it is unlikely that any such materials will be needed given the simplicity of the platform.</p>
4

Customer Support

4/10

<p>We find that Jira's support leaves a lot to be desired. Atlassian (the maker of Jira) nudge users toward self-service options like documentation and community forums, which can be frustrating when you need quick, direct help. Even when you reach out for support, the experience can be hit-or-miss—especially if you’re a smaller customer without a premium support plan.</p>
Integratability
1

Integratability

1/10

<p>There is one integration with google calendar and google meet and that is it. Bordio is seriously lacking in this department.</p>
9

Integratability

9/10

<p>Jira, powered by Atlassian, has a thriving app marketplace with thousands of plugins. If there’s a feature you need that Jira doesn’t offer natively, chances are there’s a third-party app for it. Plus, Jira provides an API, giving you the flexibility to build custom integrations when needed.</p>
Ease of Migration
1

Ease of Migration

1/10

<p>There are no exports available.</p>
5

Ease of Migration

5/10

<p>Migrating away from Jira can be a bit of a headache. Exporting data isn’t exactly seamless, and you’ll likely need to spend time cleaning and reformatting it before it’s usable in another tool. Custom fields, workflows, and issue types often don’t have direct equivalents elsewhere, which can lead to data loss or tricky mapping processes. It’s definitely something to plan for if you’re considering switching.</p>
