CharlieHR and Zoho People serve distinctly different market segments within the HRIS space. CharlieHR is better suited for small UK-based teams prioritizing ease of use and quality support, offering a streamlined experience with essential integrations and HR advisory services.

Zoho People, while more powerful in terms of customization, automation, and reporting capabilities, is better suited for larger organizations, particularly in India and UAE, who need extensive functionality and can invest time in platform mastery. The choice between them largely depends on company size, technical requirements, and whether simplicity or power is the priority.

Advantages of CharlieHR

CharlieHR is significantly more user-friendly than Zoho People
We found CharlieHR's interface straightforward to navigate, with most SMB employees able to master key functionalities within hours. In contrast, Zoho People's interface is notably more complex and unintuitive, requiring days of learning and frequent consultation of help documentation.
CharlieHR offers superior customer support compared to Zoho People
CharlieHR provides immediate access to live human agents during UK business hours, with consistently friendly and helpful support. Zoho People lacks live chat and has slow response times exceeding half a business day.
CharlieHR has better third-party integrations than Zoho People
CharlieHR offers essential integrations with popular tools like Slack, Xero, and calendar apps, making it more practical for daily use. Zoho People lacks integration with common workplace tools like Slack, though both offer APIs for custom integrations.
CharlieHR provides better HR advisory services than Zoho People
CharlieHR includes access to HR professionals for policy creation and implementation guidance, which is particularly valuable for smaller companies without internal HR expertise. Zoho People does not offer HR advisory services.

Advantages of Zoho People

Zoho People is significantly more powerful at workflow automation
We found Zoho People's workflow automation to be one of the most powerful we've tested, with extensive capabilities for automating tasks, email notifications, approvals, and document management. This is particularly valuable for larger organizations looking to streamline their HR processes. CharlieHR, in comparison, only offers basic automated notifications for tasks and time-off approvals.
Zoho People offers substantially more customization options
We find that Zoho People offers extensive options for customizing fields, performance review templates, and automated workflows, making it a great fit for organizations with specific HR process requirements. In contrast, CharlieHR's limited customization options make it less suitable for companies needing tailored solutions.
Zoho People has more advanced reporting capabilities
Zoho People's reporting module includes real-time reporting, customizable dashboards, and predictive analytics for turnover forecasting. While this might be overwhelming for small businesses, it's valuable for larger organizations requiring detailed HR analytics. CharlieHR offers only basic reporting with limited presentation options.
Zoho People provides more comprehensive learning and development features
Unlike CharlieHR, Zoho People includes built-in learning and development management capabilities, allowing organizations to create, deliver, and manage training programs. This is particularly valuable for companies focused on employee development and upskilling.

CharlieHR is best for

 • Businesses with 10-25 employees based in the UK
 • Who need core HR functionality like employee information storage, time-off management, and basic performance reviews
 • And values from 1:1 HR advice, particularly if they lack an in-house expert in HR matters.

Zoho People is best for

 • Businesses with 25-100 employees based in India or UAE
 • Who plan on bundling Zoho People with Zoho Payroll and Zoho Recruit
 • And can dedicate time to master a complex interface

CharlieHR is less good for

 • Businesses based outside of the UK looking for a highly customisable HRIS
 • Who need advanced HR features like compensation reviews, expense management, or learning & development tools
 • And/ or who doesn't need to access HR advice

Zoho People is less good for

 • Businesses with small teams based outside India or UAE
 • Who need an intuitive, easy-to-use system that doesn't require extensive training

Stackfix Verdict
Functionality
6

Functionality

6/10

CharlieHR offers some of the functionality most SMBs will need. It offers core HR functionality (e.g. store employee info, manage time-off), very basic performance management and survey functionality, and a native applicant tracking system for recruitment.

It lacks relatively advanced features such as payroll, benefits management, time tracking and compensation reviews.

6

Functionality

6/10

Zoho offers a wide range of features, covering basics along with more advanced functionality like compensation management, 360 performance review, and more at a very low cost.

While Zoho offers plenty of functionality, many features feel underdeveloped, with poor usability limiting their overall effectiveness.

Ease of Use
8

Ease of Use

8/10

CharlieHR is generally straightforward to navigate, and it will only take a few hours for an average SMB employee to master the key functionalities of the platform.

However, note that there are a few UX quirks. For example, you're unable to add a custom data field across all employees - you'll have to do this individually in each employee's profile.

1

Ease of Use

1/10

We found trying to use Zoho to be a difficult process. We found that undertaking a simple task, such as adding different employee location options, involved visiting multiple different potential locations where this functionality may have sat before finding the correct location. We predict that it would take an average SMB employee a number of days to be able to proficiently use the product.

Look and feel
8

Look and feel

8/10

CharlieHR's interface is simple and colourful, with acceptable page load times.

4

Look and feel

4/10

Zoho has a visually acceptable layout, and web pages load reasonably fast.

Customisability
3

Customisability

3/10

We find that CharlieHR lacks some common customisability options offered by most HRIS's. For example, you're only able to ask one type of question for employee surveys, you're unable to include upward feedback for performance reviews or set them for specific employee groups only - the list goes on.

8

Customisability

8/10

Zoho offers a reasonably high degree of customisability. Adding custom fields for employee information, editing performance review templates, and create automated workflows are all functions which Zoho offers.

Ease of Setup
10

Ease of Setup

10/10

CharlieHR offers a self-serve free trial without needing to talk to sales. It also takes a short time to complete basic setup (<10 minutes). Users are also able to fully customize the platform within 1-2 business days.

9

Ease of Setup

9/10

Zoho provides a 30-day free trial which does not require users to contact sales before accessing the free trial. Fully customizing and setting up the platform takes 1-2 business days.

Customer Support
8

Customer Support

8/10

CharlieHR offers in-app support with live human agents during UK business hours. Our testers usually get a response immediately, and have found the team to be friendly and helpful.

1

Customer Support

1/10

We were disappointed by Zoho's customer support options. A lack of a live chat, and slow response times (>0.5 business day) mean that most support is obtained via the support page on the website. This support page is difficult to navigate and often contains information that does not match to the specific look of the software - we found, for example, that recently posted explanatory YouTube videos did not accurately represent the software.

Integratability
5

Integratability

5/10

CharlieHR only offers a handful of pre-built integrations with the most relevant third party software, such as Slack, Xero and Pento for payroll. It also has an API for custom integrations.

5

Integratability

5/10

While Zapier lacks pre-built integrations with some of the most important third party products (such as Slack or Jira), it does provide an open API allowing users to build their own integrations where necessary.

Ease of Migration
9

Ease of Migration

9/10

Export of key data is available via self-serve, and a full account export is readily available on request.

8

Ease of Migration

8/10

Zoho has powerful data export options. In addition to picking from a range of predetermined reports, users can customise data exports to extract the insights that they are looking for.
