Personio and Factorial serve different segments of the SMB market, with distinct strengths and weaknesses. Personio is better suited for companies prioritizing extensive third-party integrations and sophisticated goal-setting capabilities, particularly those with complex performance management needs. Its superior data tracking and historical change monitoring make it ideal for organizations with strict compliance requirements.

Conversely, Factorial is the better choice for companies that need high levels of customization, faster performance, and automated HR communications. Its modern interface and automation capabilities make it more suitable for fast-moving companies with regular hiring needs and unique HR processes.

Advantages of Factorial

Factorial is significantly more customizable than Personio
We found Factorial's customization capabilities to be far superior, with an impressive SQL editor for creating highly customized reports and the ability to customize most aspects including data fields, reports, leave policies, and workflows. This is particularly valuable for organizations that need to adapt their HRIS to specific business processes. Personio, in contrast, has limited customization options, even lacking basic features like custom employment types.
Factorial has a more modern and responsive interface
We found Factorial's interface to be notably more modern and responsive compared to Personio's slower interface which suffers from 3-4 second page load times. This makes a significant difference in day-to-day usage, especially for HR teams managing large workforces.

Advantages of Personio

Personio is significantly better at integrating with other tools
With 150+ pre-built integrations across various categories, Personio offers nearly three times the integration options compared to Factorial's 50+ integrations. This is particularly valuable for growing companies that need their HRIS to work seamlessly with their existing tech stack.
Personio offers superior goal-setting capabilities
While both platforms offer goal-setting features, Personio provides more sophisticated functionality including the ability to create subgoals and add weights to goals, which Factorial lacks. This makes it more suitable for companies with complex performance management needs.
Personio has better data tracking capabilities
Unlike Factorial, Personio allows users to view historical changes to company and employee data, which is crucial for audit trails and compliance tracking. This feature is particularly important for companies that need to maintain detailed records of personnel changes.

  • Businesses looking for highly customizable HR workflows

Factorial is less good for

  • Businesses based outside of Europe

  • OR businesses seeking an all-in-one HRIS with payroll and SaaS/ device management functionality

Personio is less good for

  • Businesses with teams under 25 employees based in the US or non-EU countries
  • Who need customisability for basic features such as employee data fields
  • And/or who need comprehensive benefits administration, payroll management, or hardware/software management

Stackfix Verdict
Functionality
7

Functionality

7/10

<p>Factorial offers most functionality that most SMBs will need. Besides core HR functionality (store employee info, managing time off), Factorial also allows you to run performance reviews, manage employee shifts, manage expenses, automate workflows and recruit with a native applicant tracking system.</p><p>Features we found missing are payroll, app/ device management. Factorial also gets a point deducted because a lot of its modules seem half-baked.</p>

<p>Personio offers most functionality that most SMBs will need. Besides core HR features (store employee info, manage time-of), Personio also allows you to run performance reviews, run compensation reviews, recruit employee via a native applicant tracking system and more.</p><p>It's missing the ability to manage payroll and benefits, and manage employee's software access and benefits.</p>
Ease of Use
5

Ease of Use

5/10

<p>Due to Factorial's rich functionality, it will take an average SMB employee at least 1-2 days to master key functionalities of the product.</p><p>Some key workflows, such as syncing your calendar to reflect time-off, and using Factorials' workflow builder to automate workflows can also be complex and unintuitive.</p>
6

Ease of Use

6/10

<p>We find that Personio is generally user-friendly and easy to navigate. However, there are some UX imperfections and HR managers we've interviewed report their teams struggling with Personio's interface and locating key information.</p>
Look and feel
7

<p>While Personio has a clean and simple interface that is visually acceptable, it suffers from slow loading times (3-4 seconds per page).</p>
Customisability
8

Customisability

8/10

<p>You can customise most things on Factorial, from data fields, reports, leave policies, workflows and more. One of the standout strengths here is that it offers an SQL editor for creating highly customised reports.</p><p>However, it lacks the deeper customisability offered by more mature HRIS (e.g. Rippling, HiBob), such as creating workflows with conditional logic.</p>
5

Customisability

5/10

<p>Personio has strong customisability for some features such as workflow automation while lacks basic customisability for other.<span style="color: rgb(9, 9, 11);"> As an example, you are stuck with 2 employment types only - "Internal" and "External". There is no way to add common employment types e.g. "Full-time"/ "Intern"/ "Contractor" etc. It's also impossible to customise things like the email reminders and the platform's layout. For teams looking for high customisability for most features, Personio is quite limiting. However, teams looking for basic customisability for basic features and strong customisability for automation, Personio is a strong option.</span></p>
Ease of Setup
5

Ease of Setup

5/10

<p>Factorial offers a free trial but requires you to talk to sales first (one round of talking to sales). It takes 10-30mins to complete basic set up (entering company information and adding employees). Fully customizing and setting up the platform takes approximately 1 week and is simple enough do without assistance from an expert; more complicated processes can be done with help from the help center.</p>

Customer Support
6

6/10

<p>Factorial only seems to offers support via phone call/ a ticket form during European business hours. Users we've interviewed also mentioned that although Factorial's Help Centre is low quality, the support from their Account Managers has been great.</p>

5/10

<p>You can reach Personio's support team via web tickets and callbacks in-app during UK/ Germany business hours. Unlike most HRIS's, live chat doesn't seem available as an option. Users we've interviewed have complained about Personio ignoring requests, especially for English channels.</p>
