Fathom and Grain both bring a lot to the table - but they have different strengths.

Fathom is excels at real-time coaching and meeting performance. It’s a great fit for teams focused on improving how they show up in calls, with features like live feedback, unlimited storage, and post-call insights designed to level up communication.

Grain, on the other hand, shines in post-meeting organization. It’s better for teams that care about capturing, structuring, and sharing insights across tools. With its powerful search, polished interface, and deep integrations, it’s built to help you make the most of what happens after the meeting.

Advantages of Fathom

Fathom offers superior keyword tracking alerts
While both platforms offer keyword tracking, Fathom's implementation stands out for its ability to notify users when important keywords are mentioned and allow immediate playback of those segments. This feature makes Fathom more suitable for teams needing real-time keyword monitoring, as it enables swift action to be taken in response to keyword mentions.
Fathom is significantly better at real-time coaching
We found that Fathom's real-time coaching features, which alert users when they're monologuing and provide instant feedback during calls, offer unique value that Grain doesn't match. This is particularly valuable for sales teams and anyone looking to improve their communication skills during meetings.
Fathom provides unlimited storage in free tier
Unlike Grain's limited 20-meeting storage cap, Fathom offers unlimited storage in its free tier, making it more suitable for teams with high meeting volumes or those wanting to maintain comprehensive meeting archives without worrying about storage limits.

Advantages of Grain

Grain is more polished and intuitive than Fathom

We found Grain's interface exceptionally well-designed, with careful attention to detail and a streamlined user experience. Unlike Fathom's overwhelming interface with constant tooltips and prompts, Grain keeps advanced features tucked away until needed, making it more approachable for both casual and power users.

Grain offers superior integration capabilities compared to Fathom
While testing, we found Grain's integration ecosystem far more comprehensive than Fathom's, with native integrations and ready-made Zapier templates for various platforms. This makes it particularly valuable for teams using multiple tools, whereas Fathom's limited integration options may require more manual work.
Grain provides better note editing flexibility than Fathom
We find Grain more flexible when it comes to editing meeting notes, as it allows us to make changes to all aspects of the notes. In contrast, Fathom only permits direct editing of action items and recording snippets, requiring users to regenerate notes through templates for other changes.

Fathom is best for

 • Businesses with high meeting volume (20-50 meetings per week) who need comprehensive meeting analysis
 • Who need advanced transcript editing capabilities and detailed speaker identification
 • And/or who want real-time coaching features and keyword alerts during meetings

Grain is best for

 • Businesses with high meeting volume (20-50 meetings per week) who need comprehensive meeting documentation
 • Who need powerful search and organization capabilities across individual meetings, like filtering by speaker, topic, and date
 • And/or who want extensive integration options with major platforms like Salesforce, HubSpot, and Slack

Fathom is less good for

 • Businesses with a low meeting volume (5-10 meetings per week)
 • Who need simple transcription without extensive editing capabilities and real-time coaching features
 • And/or who want a streamlined interface without extensive tooltips and feedback prompts

Grain is less good for

 • Businesses with very low meeting volume (<5 meetings per week)
 • Who need to record discretely without a meeting bot
 • And/ or needs a mobile-app for in-person meetings

Functionality
9

Functionality

9/10

Fathom is one of the most feature-rich AI notetakers we’ve reviewed—it took a while to test everything.

It’s clear why there’s a “Give Feedback” option in so many places throughout the app: if you’re trying to accomplish something, there’s a good chance Fathom has either already built it or optimised it for quick use.

8

Functionality

8/10

Grain is well-rounded, offering all the functionality you'd expect from an AI notetaker. It simplifies managing your team, upcoming meetings, summary templates, playback, finding and organizing meeting information, and sharing with participants and team members. Every feature is carefully chosen, with no unnecessary functionality added.

The only notable missing feature is insights spanning multiple meetings.

9

Ease of Use

9/10

Setting up with Grain is extremely easy, and its core functionality is intuitive. Users can choose how deeply they want to engage with the platform. If they stick to the core features, they won’t be overwhelmed by additional functionality, as advanced features are typically well-hidden in settings and can be accessed only when needed.

Look and feel
4

Look and feel

4/10

Fathom’s extensive feature set comes at a cost—everywhere you move your mouse, a tooltip appears, or there’s an option to click something. This can get overwhelming when you’re just trying to accomplish simple tasks.

During setup and early use, they heavily promote their “Point” system (feedback in exchange for points) and frequently send feedback emails and questions, which can become a bit intrusive.

9

Look and feel

9/10

Grain is exceptionally polished, offering rich functionality without overwhelming the interface with unnecessary detail. Finding what you need is easy thanks to its powerful search. Within meetings, you can view the recording and notes in three templates, each designed for:

Reviewing calls and coaching

Navigating and searching calls

Creating clips

There’s a good balance between quick-access features and more advanced settings, with only essential elements displayed on the page. Even the AI assistant is tucked behind a button that opens a pop-up when pressed, keeping the interface streamlined overall.

Customisability
8

Customisability

9/10

Grain is highly customizable at every stage, including:

Fully editable transcripts, both in text and speakers.

Notes that can be regenerated with a different template, and the ability to create custom templates. AI assistant answers can be added to notes and templates with a single click.

Comments can be left on notes, and highlights can be created, with both displayed separately.

Clips can be merged into stories, and meetings can be grouped into playlists.

Tags can be added to meetings, and custom trackers set up to track specific topics—by both single words and multi-word phrases.

Custom words can be added for improved recognition in transcripts.
