GoCo and Zoho People serve distinctly different market segments within the HRIS space. GoCo excels as a user-friendly, US-focused solution with strong payroll and core HR features, making it ideal for US-based SMBs prioritizing ease of use and customer support. Its intuitive interface and quick implementation time make it particularly suitable for companies without dedicated HR tech specialists.

Zoho People, while offering more powerful automation and reporting capabilities, is better suited for technically-savvy teams in India or UAE who can navigate its complex interface and need advanced workflow automation. Its steep learning curve and poor customer support make it less suitable for companies needing an out-of-the-box solution.

Advantages of GoCo

GoCo offers superior customer support
GoCo provides dedicated client success managers and specialists with quick response times (<1 hour), while Zoho People's support is notably slower (>0.5 business day) and lacks live chat options. This difference is crucial for teams requiring regular support or implementing new HR processes.
GoCo is significantly more user-friendly
While both products offer extensive functionality, GoCo's interface is much more intuitive and easier to navigate compared to Zoho People's complex and often confusing layout. We found that GoCo users can become proficient within half a day, while Zoho People requires several days of training.
GoCo has better US-focused payroll capabilities
GoCo offers comprehensive built-in US payroll functionality including off-cycle payrolls and flexible payment schedules, while Zoho People requires additional Zoho Payroll purchase and only supports India and UAE. This makes GoCo a stronger choice for US-based companies.
GoCo provides better performance review capabilities
GoCo offers more sophisticated performance review features including AI-generated summaries and flexible review cycles, while Zoho People struggles with basic review management and lacks advanced features like different review types. This makes GoCo more suitable for companies prioritizing performance management.

Advantages of Zoho People

Zoho People is significantly more customizable
We find that Zoho People offers extensive customization options for fields, workflows, and data collection, allowing for more granular control, particularly in creating custom fields with specific limitations and character constraints.
Zoho People has superior workflow automation
We found Zoho People's workflow automation to be one of the most powerful we've tested, with sophisticated capabilities for email notifications, approvals, and document management. While GoCo offers good workflow automation, Zoho's implementation is more comprehensive and flexible.
Zoho People offers more powerful reporting capabilities
The reporting module in Zoho People includes real-time reporting, customizable dashboards, and predictive analytics for turnover and talent management. While this might be overwhelming for smaller companies, it offers significantly more depth than GoCo's more basic reporting functionality.

Stackfix Verdict
Functionality
9

Functionality

9/10

GoCo offers all of the functionality that most small to medium companies will need, though it lacks some more advanced functionality that more sophisticated companies might expect. Sophisticated payroll functionality, an integrated applicant tracking system, and managing benefits are a few examples of functions that users can expect from GoCo. For larger companies, however, users may expect more, such as managing hardware and software access (which is on GoCo's roadmap).

6

Functionality

6/10

Zoho offers a wide range of features, covering basics along with more advanced functionality like compensation management, 360 performance review, and more at a very low cost.

While Zoho offers plenty of functionality, many features feel underdeveloped, with poor usability limiting their overall effectiveness.

Ease of Use
5

Ease of Use

5/10

GoCo is reasonably easy to understand and use, though it does require some getting used to - we think that an average startup employee might require up to half a day and some guidance to proficiently use all key functionalities of the product. While the layout makes it easy to navigate to a desired page, we found that there were times where specific settings were not always where we expected them. For example, if you wanted to adjust permissions for who could view a specific performance review, this cannot be done when creating the performance review - instead, this needs to be set in the permissions app.

1

Ease of Use

1/10

We found trying to use Zoho to be a difficult process. We found that undertaking a simple task, such as adding different employee location options, involved visiting multiple different potential locations where this functionality may have sat before finding the correct location. We predict that it would take an average SMB employee a number of days to be able to proficiently use the product.

Look and feel
8

Look and feel

8/10

GoCo is visually appealing - the collapsing/expanding sidebar enables users to view more information on their screen, without compromising functionality. Pages are fast to load.

4

Look and feel

4/10

Zoho has a visually acceptable layout, and web pages load reasonably fast.

Customisability
7

Customisability

7/10

GoCo provides users with a high degree of customisability. users are able to customise most aspects of their workflow, from specific workflow automations, to which reports they would like to generate.

While the ability to customise is far-reaching, however, we found that the ease with which users can select specific groups for a policy to apply to lets it down. Users are unable to select 'groups' for a workflow to apply, your to, instead having to select either all employees or specific employees. This not only means that selecting employees takes longer (even though you can filter employees by groups when selecting them), but it also means that selected employees becomes a static list, rather than dynamically following changes in your business.

8

Customisability

8/10

Zoho offers a reasonably high degree of customisability. Adding custom fields for employee information, editing performance review templates, and create automated workflows are all functions which Zoho offers.

Ease of Setup
4

Ease of Setup

4/10

GoCO does not offer a self-serve free trial and purchasing requires talking to sales. It takes 10-30mins to complete basic setup (entering company information and adding employees). Fully customizing and setting up the platform can be done within the week. Customization and setting up is simple enough to complete without help from an expert and more complicated processes can be done with help from the help center.

9

Ease of Setup

9/10

Zoho provides a 30-day free trial which does not require users to contact sales before accessing the free trial. Fully customizing and setting up the platform takes 1-2 business days.

Customer Support
7

Customer Support

7/10

GoCo provides all users with a dedicated client success manager, client success specialists, and a dedicated support team who are able to offer HR support to clients. The combination of these provisions mean that users should feel incredibly well supported when using GoCo. GoCo also provide client success analysts who are on hand to support employees, meaning that your employees will also feel well supported.

We found that customer support was generally quickly to respond to questions (<1 hour), although the lack of a live chat is disappointing for a product with this level of customer support. Users instead either need to call or email customer support. For customers outside the US, calling support requires contacting an American phone number during American hours of operation.

1

Customer Support

1/10

We were disappointed by Zoho's customer support options. A lack of a live chat, and slow response times (>0.5 business day) mean that most support is obtained via the support page on the website. This support page is difficult to navigate and often contains information that does not match to the specific look of the software - we found, for example, that recently posted explanatory YouTube videos did not accurately represent the software.

Integratability
7

Integratability

7/10

GoCo offers pre-built integrations with most relevant third party products (such as google and outlook calendars), however it lacks integrations with some popular third party products such as Lattice and Ravio, which some users might look for.

5

Integratability

5/10

While Zapier lacks pre-built integrations with some of the most important third party products (such as Slack or Jira), it does provide an open API allowing users to build their own integrations where necessary.

Ease of Migration
6

Ease of Migration

6/10

GoCo allows for the exporting of key data via reports (which can either be from templates, or be custom made). Its selection of pre-built integrations also allows users to export data to these third party apps, such as payroll data to Xero. Its inability to export data via an API holds it back, however.

8

Ease of Migration

8/10

Zoho has powerful data export options. In addition to picking from a range of predetermined reports, users can customise data exports to extract the insights that they are looking for.
