JazzHR and Gusto serve distinctly different hiring needs. JazzHR is the clear choice for companies serious about recruitment, offering robust workflow automation, comprehensive candidate evaluation tools, and extensive customization options. It's particularly well-suited for growing SMBs that need a dedicated ATS with sophisticated features.

Gusto, on the other hand, is better suited for very small businesses already using Gusto's HRIS who have minimal hiring needs and value the convenience of an integrated system over robust recruitment features.

Advantages of Gusto

Gusto is significantly more user-friendly
We found Gusto's interface exceptionally easy to navigate, with most users able to master key functionalities within 30 minutes. This is particularly valuable for small businesses without dedicated HR teams. In contrast, JazzHR requires around half a day of training to become proficient.
Gusto offers superior HRIS integration
For companies already using Gusto's HRIS, the native integration between their HRIS and ATS creates a seamless workflow for transitioning new hires. JazzHR lacks a native HRIS, requiring third-party integrations that may not be as smooth.
Gusto provides better customer support
We find that Gusto's in-app support during US business hours with live human agents consistently offers fast and effective problem-solving, making it a standout in terms of immediate availability.

Advantages of JazzHR

JazzHR has much more robust reporting capabilities
We find JazzHR's reporting capabilities to be comprehensive, with customizable dashboards that display key metrics like time-to-hire and conversion rates, and the option to schedule automated report delivery. Gusto's reporting, on the other hand, is limited, offering only a single, non-customizable applicant report.
JazzHR is significantly better at workflow automation
We found JazzHR's workflow automation capabilities to be excellent and highly intuitive. The system allows for workflow templates, automated task assignments, and email triggers when candidates move between stages. This is particularly valuable for teams looking to standardize their hiring process and reduce manual work. Gusto, in contrast, offers no workflow automation capabilities.
JazzHR offers superior candidate evaluation tools
JazzHR provides comprehensive candidate evaluation tools with customizable scorecards and interview kits that make detailed feedback collection straightforward. We enable collaborative hiring decisions by allowing teams to vote on candidates and share comments with each other. In contrast, Gusto's evaluation functionality is limited to basic scorecards during the interview stage.
JazzHR provides superior interview pipeline customization
JazzHR allows full customization of interview pipelines with the ability to add/remove stages, rename stages, and save pipeline templates for future use. This flexibility is crucial for companies with diverse hiring needs. Gusto offers no pipeline customization, limiting users to three default stages.

Gusto is best for

  • Businesses based in the US
  • With very low hiring volumes (1 open position at a time)
  • Who need wide job posting reach and want to post to 100+ job boards for free
  • And who (plan to) use Gusto as their payroll system

JazzHR is best for

  • Businesses with moderate hiring volume (3-5 job positions at a time)
  • Who need to automate their hiring workflow with customizable templates and email sequences
  • And/or who want standardized candidate evaluation with customizable interview kits and weighted scorecards.

Gusto is less good for

  • Businesses based outside of the US
  • Or who have mid-to-high hiring volumes (1+ positions open simultaneously)
  • Or who don't use Gusto as their payroll system

JazzHR is less good for

  • Businesses with high hiring volume (5-10 job positions at a time)
  • Who need advanced candidate sourcing capabilities like automated email sequences and candidate resurfacing
  • And/or who need a modern, sleek interface with features like Kanban views and video responses.

Functionality
2

Functionality

2/10

<p>Gusto's ATS comes with its HRIS and its functionality is very basic. It lacks the ability to customize interview stages, parse CVs, schedule interviews, set pre-screening questions, create assessments, or set up an employee referral program. It also can't generate reports on time-in-stage and other key metrics.</p><p>However, it does allow multi-posting of job ads to 100+ job boards for free.&nbsp;</p>

Functionality

8/10

<p>JazzHR offers a suit of functionality at covers almost any need that a SMB could have throughout their hiring process. Most notably, a career site builders, LinkedIn chrome extensions, background check integrations, CV parser, interview kits and scorecards. However, for large firms who want a more all encompassing ATS, JazzHR's the lack of native features like HRIS can make it could make it less attractive than a more heavyweight ATS.</p>

<p><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">JazzHR is generally intuitive and easy to use. 5

Look and feel

5/10

<p>We find Gusto's interface colourful and visually acceptable. However, it suffers from slow page load times (3+ seconds), especially when generating reports.</p>
4

Look and feel

4/10

<p>JazzHR's software has a dated, tried and, at times, childish look. It lacks a modern and sleek feel, but nonetheless its UI architecture is well-structured reducing the time spent looking for particular functionalities.</p><p>JazzHR's are generally fast with each pages taking ~ 1 second to load.</p>
Customisability
2

Customisability

2/10

<p>Gusto's ATS has very limited customisability. Users cannot customize the interview pipeline at all, being stuck with 3 default stages.</p><p>Customization on the public-facing careers page is also very limited, allowing only changes to the company logo and "about us" description.&nbsp;</p>
8

Customisability

8/10

<p>JazzHR has strong customisability. Application forms, job adverts, interview kits, scorecards and automated emails all have impressive levels of customisation. However, the branded career page offers only minimal cosmetic and functional customisation. It must be noted, though, that through integrations with Vizi and Recruiter.com career pages become far more customisable.</p>
Ease of Setup
6

Ease of Setup

6/10

<p>Gusto doesn't offer a free trial and requires speaking to sales before making a purchase. However, the ATS is very simple to use due to its limited functionality. Basic setup takes &lt;10mins and fully customizing the platform takes approximately 1 business day.</p>

6

Integratability

6/10

<p>Despite having almost 200 pre-built integrations with most relevant products across most categories, it is crucially lacking any integrations with candidate assessment and video interview tools. It does have an API for custom integrations.</p>

9

9/10

<p>JazzHR makes it easy to export reports. For both key data (time to hire, conversion rates, volume in stage etc.) and custom data exports are available self-serve to a CVS file.
