Zelt and HiBob both offer a feature-rich HRIS with built-in UK payroll. Zelt excels as a user-friendly ideal for smaller teams needing efficient hardware/software management and straightforward HR processes. Its clean interface and quick learning curve make it perfect for companies prioritizing ease of use over extensive customization.

HiBob, conversely, is better suited for larger organizations (35+ employees) requiring deep customization in performance management, engagement tracking, and workflow automation. While both offer UK payroll, HiBob's extensive feature set comes with greater complexity, making it more appropriate for companies with dedicated HR teams who can invest time in setup and configuration.

Advantages of HiBob

HiBob is significantly more powerful at employee engagement
We found HiBob's engagement functionality to be exceptional, with a highly customizable survey system that includes eNPS tracking and sophisticated question logic. Unlike Zelt's basic survey tool, HiBob offers a social media-style homepage for announcements and celebrations, plus Slack/Teams integration for automated sharing. This makes it particularly valuable for larger organizations focused on building strong company culture.
HiBob offers far more sophisticated workflow automation
HiBob's automation capabilities are significantly more advanced than Zelt's basic reminder system. While testing, we found HiBob allows complex workflow creation with conditional logic, automated email triggers, and calendar event generation. This is particularly valuable for HR teams managing multiple concurrent processes across larger organizations.
HiBob provides more sophisticated performance management
HiBob's performance review system offers significantly more flexibility than Zelt's basic functionality. We found HiBob allows custom review types, complex question logic, and automated calculations. This makes it particularly suitable for organizations with sophisticated performance management needs.
HiBob has much better integration capabilities
HiBob offers over 110 pre-built integrations across various categories, while Zelt only supports a handful of basic integrations. HiBob also provides an API for custom integrations, which Zelt lacks. This makes HiBob much more flexible for organizations with complex software ecosystems.

Advantages of Zelt

Zelt offers device & app management functionality natively

Zelt offers IT management functionality natively, which allows you to:

  • Buy/ rent, ship, and configure employee hardware via MDM (e.g. wipe and lock device remotely)
  • Manage employee access to common software e.g. Zoom, Slack, Hubspot

HiBob only offers this via 3rd party integrations (e.g Okta and Hofy), which necessitate additional set-up time and cost.

Zelt is easier to use

Partly due to HiBob's richer customisability, key workflows on HiBob do take a few more steps compared to Zelt e.g. onboarding, setting up a performance review cycle.

We also find HiBob's UX to be a bit clumsy at points e.g. lacking basic filters to locate an employee's performance review.

Zelt is meaningfully cheaper, and doesn't force an annual contract

Zelt is one of the most cost-effective HRIS in our curation, with transparent, affordable pricing. In comparison, HiBob's pricing is gated behind a sales call, they force an annual contract, and also charge a 5-15% implementation fee of the annual contract value.

HiBob is best for

  • Medium to large-sized teams (>35 employees) who need very rich functionality
  • Including Payroll (UK-only) and Applicant Tracking System
  • And/ or who needs a highly customisable HRIS to support complex workflows

Zelt is best for

  • Businesses with 20+ employees based in the UK who need low-cost, easy-to-use HR + payroll solution
  • And are looking for their first HRIS

HiBob is less good for

  • Businesses with small teams (<35 employees) based outside the UK
  • Who need direct hardware and software management functionality
  • And/or who need integrated compliance management and HR advisory services

Zelt is less good for

  • Businesses based outside of the UK
  • Who need a HRIS with even richer functionality, such as advanced automation and reporting
