Hive and ProjectManager serve distinct project management needs, with Hive excelling in automation and integration capabilities while ProjectManager focuses on ease of use and basic project management functionality.

Hive is better suited to larger organizations with complex workflows and multiple tool integrations, offering superior automation capabilities and customer support. ProjectManager, on the other hand, is ideal for teams seeking a straightforward, easy-to-learn solution for basic project management needs, with strong portfolio management capabilities and an intuitive interface.

Advantages of Hive

Hive is significantly better at workflow automation
We found Hive's automation capabilities to be exceptional, offering extensive integration possibilities across apps and a rich selection of trigger and action functions. Unlike ProjectManager's basic automation features, Hive allows for complex conditional logic and cross-app automations, making it ideal for teams looking to streamline complex workflows.
Hive offers superior customer support
Hive provides more comprehensive support options than ProjectManager, including live in-app chat, email support, and extensive self-serve materials through Hive University. This makes it particularly valuable for teams that need reliable, quick access to help.
Hive has better third-party integration capabilities
While ProjectManager relies heavily on Zapier for most integrations, Hive offers native integrations with a wider range of third-party tools, making it more suitable for teams using multiple software solutions. This is particularly valuable for organizations with complex tech stacks.

Advantages of ProjectManager

ProjectManager is significantly easier to use than Hive
We found ProjectManager's interface to be exceptionally intuitive, requiring only about an hour of training for new users to become proficient. In contrast, Hive requires around half a day of training, particularly due to its complex workflow automation features. This makes ProjectManager particularly valuable for teams that need to get up and running quickly.
ProjectManager offers better customer support than Hive
While both products have strong customer support, ProjectManager's self-serve materials are particularly comprehensive and well-structured, making users feel in control of the product from the start. Though Hive also offers good support, ProjectManager's onboarding materials are notably more effective for getting teams operational quickly.
ProjectManager has superior data export capabilities compared to Hive
ProjectManager offers comprehensive export options for all key data, reports, and dashboards to both PDF and Excel formats. Hive, in comparison, only allows PDF exports and lacks custom reporting options. This makes ProjectManager more suitable for teams that need flexible data analysis and reporting capabilities.

Hive is best for

 • Who need sophisticated workflow automation across multiple apps and comprehensive time tracking
 • And/or who want easy onboarding with strong customer support and extensive self-serve training materials.

ProjectManager is best for

 • Businesses with a moderate number of active projects (5-10 projects at a time)
 • Who need efficient task management and basic workflow automation for day-to-day operations
 • And/or who want comprehensive project visibility through ready-made reports and dashboards.

Hive is less good for

 • Businesses with a low number of active projects (3-5 projects at a time)
 • Who need real-time collaboration features and internal document creation capabilities
 • And/or who want advanced project management features but have limited budgets.

ProjectManager is less good for

 • Businesses with a high number of active projects (10+ projects at a time) requiring sophisticated document creation and custom reporting capabilities
 • Who need advanced workflow automation with extensive third-party integrations and email templates
 • And/or who want sophisticated approval processes and built-in team chat capabilities.

Stackfix Verdict
Functionality
6

Functionality

6/10

Generally, Hive's functionality is strong where it is available, but many of its best features are only available on its most expensive plans. Hive's automation both in-app and across app stand out as incredibly strong. Time-tracking functionality is also very impressive - with quick ways to filter for availability, but, again, this is only available on their more expensive plans. For creative work and real-time collaboration - Hive isn't great. It lacks any real time collaboration tools and the ability to make internal documents.

6

Functionality

6/10

ProjectManager has most of the functionality that any team will need. More importantly, these features are done well. Reporting, automations and task management are all strong and easy to use. However, none of ProjectManager's features are exceptional - they do the basics and they do them well - that's it. For example, automations are only offer 12 action and 7 trigger functions and no integrations with email, slack etc.

Ease of Use
7

Ease of Use

7/10

Hive is easy to use - functions are well-labelled and the reasonable amount of customisation means that you never feel overwhelmed. The only exception to this is workflow automations across apps. As such, we expect an average start-up employee would require around half a day and minimal guidance to proficiently use all key functionalities of the product.

Processes are always easy to locate key info and processes are generally intuitive.

8

Ease of Use

8/10

The learning curve here is not steep at all - the product is usable right from the word go. We estimate that a start-up employee would require about 1 hour and some guidance to be comfortable using all key functionalities.

Most key functionalities are very intuitively located. However some are hidden. For example, automations are not well-labelled on the UI.

Look and feel
6

Look and feel

6/10

Hive is more colourful than some of its competitors with similar UIs and the general architecture of its UI is nicely layout. That being said hive is not visually anything special - it just does the job.

6

Look and feel

6/10

ProjectManager has some colour customisation available. That being said, it could do with a touch more finesse in places. It is by no means an unattractive piece of software but it's nothing special.

Loading times are fast at ~ 1 second per page.

Customisability
6

Customisability

6/10

Hive has some strong customisation features - unfortunately many of these are only available of its more expensive tiers. Customisations for automated workflows are strongest with conditional logic and plenty of action and trigger functions across many apps. Forums are also highly customisable with conditional logic again available, along with many answer types and the ability to turn responses of forms into tasks.

5

Customisability

5/10

ProjectManager could do better here, but still has some good customisation. You cannot create a custom report in ProjectManager - there are only self-serve reports available. However, the level of filtering available when choosing which projects, tasks, tags etc. should be measured when creating these self-serve reports is extensive. Automations, on the other hand, could do more customisation wise. They offer basic automations - but no email templates or integrations with 3rd parties, e.g. sending a message in Slack.

Ease of Setup
9

Ease of Setup

9/10

Offers a self-serve free trial and allows purchase without needing to talk to sales. Getting started and setting up a few tasks and subtasks should take 20-30 minutes, because it has a very rich library of templates. Full setup should take less than a day.

Customer Support
9

Customer Support

9/10

Hive has great customer support personalised help is available both via email and on a live chat in app and responses are fast (<1 hour).

Self-serve materials also have great depth and quality. In particular, succinct video tutorials make discovering the platform a breeze.

Personalised support is not available via in-app chat but is available on email and and over the phone. Responses are fast and helpful.

Self-serve materials are of great depth and quality. Integratability
8

Integratability

8/10

Hive has integrations with most third parties of interest. Most notably, the across-app automations are available with such a large varied of third parties that Hive seamlessly integrates within your project management ecosystem.

Hive also has an API which allows teams to build custom integrations if needed.

5

Integratability

5/10

ProjectManager integrates with some tools natively but relies heavily of Zapier for most integrations. For example, Salesforce, Jira, onedrive, dropbox are all available only through Zapier.

However, ProjectManager offers an API to build custom integrations where necessary.

Ease of Migration
6

Ease of Migration

6/10

All reports can be exported to a pdf file. There is a large selection of self-serve analytics with great depth and quality (much of this is behind their most expensive tiers) but there are no custom reports.

8

Ease of Migration

8/10

Exports of all key data, reports and dashboards are available to PDF and/or excel.
