Wrike and Hive best serve different types project management needs. Wrike excels in customization and sophisticated project management features, making it ideal for larger organizations requiring detailed control over their project workflows and extensive template customization. Its superior task management and visualization tools make it particularly suitable for complex, multi-stakeholder projects.

However, Hive stands out with its exceptional automation capabilities, superior customer support, and broader integration options, making it better suited for teams prioritizing workflow automation and requiring extensive third-party tool integration. While Wrike offers deeper customization, Hive provides a more accessible and integrated experience with better communication features.

Advantages of Hive

Hive offers superior workflow automation
Hive's automation capabilities are exceptional, featuring an impressive array of trigger and action functions across many apps. The platform offers both self-serve automation templates and custom automation options, with conditional logic available. While Wrike also offers automation, it's notably more difficult to set up and manage, especially for users new to project management software.
Hive is significantly better at customer support
We found Hive's customer support to be exceptional, with fast response times (<1 hour) and personalized help available via both email and live chat. The depth and quality of self-serve materials, particularly video tutorials, make platform discovery seamless. In contrast, Wrike relies heavily on templated bot responses and FAQs, which can frustrate users seeking direct assistance.
Hive has better third-party integration capabilities
Hive's integration capabilities are more comprehensive, with native support for key platforms like Zapier, GitHub, and Freshdesk. This makes it easier to connect with thousands of apps and streamline workflows across different tools. Wrike, by comparison, requires third-party software for many integrations and lacks native support for several crucial platforms.

Advantages of Wrike

Wrike has superior project templates compared to Hive
Wrike's project templates are more sophisticated and comprehensive, going beyond basic templates to include custom project types that modify the entire project vocabulary. While Hive offers 106 templates, Wrike's template system is more flexible and can be deeply customized for specific business use cases.
Wrike offers better task management capabilities than Hive
Wrike provides more sophisticated task management features, with an intuitive interface for prioritizing and organizing tasks. While Hive offers basic task management, Wrike's implementation is more comprehensive, allowing for deeper customization of task types and better client access control.
Wrike is significantly more customizable than Hive
Wrike offers deeper customization options across the platform, with an extensive range of templates and workflow options that can be tailored to specific business needs. While Hive restricts many customization features to higher-priced tiers, Wrike provides these capabilities as standard, making it particularly valuable for teams requiring specialized project management workflows.
Wrike has better project visualization options than Hive
Wrike offers more sophisticated project visualization capabilities, with better implementation of Gantt charts and Kanban boards. We find Hive's project views to be less effective, while Wrike's visualization tools provide clearer information display and better color-coding for status and importance.

Functionality
6

Functionality

6/10

Generally, Hive's functionality is strong where it is available, but many of its best features are only available on its most expensive plans. Hive's automation both in-app and across app stand out as incredibly strong. Time-tracking functionality is also very impressive - with quick ways to filter for availability, but, again, this is only available on their more expensive plans. For creative work and real-time collaboration - Hive isn't great. It lacks any real time collaboration tools and the ability to make internal documents.

8

Functionality

8/10

Wrike has most of the sought after features and is deeply customisable, offering customisable templates, automated workflows and types. It also supports OKR/goal setting and has additional features which act as a cherry on top like AI work creation and effort management.

However, it lacks a few things which may be useful for real time collaboration like a realtime chat between team members or any sort of messaging service. Also, although it allows files to be added to tasks, it doesn't offer a shared space for docs and files or any way to create a company wide wiki which is important for larger companies.

Ease of Use
7

Ease of Use

7/10

Hive is easy to use - functions are well-labelled and the reasonable amount of customisation means that you never feel overwhelmed. The only exception to this is workflow automations across apps. As such, we expect an average start-up employee would require around half a day and minimal guidance to proficiently use all key functionalities of the product.

Processes are always easy to locate key info and processes are generally intuitive.

5

Ease of Use

5/10

Overall, Wrike has a generally well planned UI which makes it intuitive to use overall.

It falls short on a few aspects though, some of the language used to relate tasks is quite complex and it's difficult to build a complex workflow in the beginning. We estimate that an average startup employee would take around 1-2 days to get their hands on this tool and be able to leverage its functionality efficiently.

Look and feel
6

Look and feel

6/10

Hive is more colourful than some of its competitors with similar UIs and the general architecture of its UI is nicely layout. That being said hive is not visually anything special - it just does the job.

7

Look and feel

7/10

The software is visually appealing generally and has a simplistic UI which makes it easier to understand what's happening on a page. The load times for any page are quite fast and has an overall attractive look and feel, except the gantt chart which looks slightly blocky/shaky.

Customisability
6

Customisability

6/10

Hive has some strong customisation features - unfortunately many of these are only available of its more expensive tiers. Customisations for automated workflows are strongest with conditional logic and plenty of action and trigger functions across many apps. Forums are also highly customisable with conditional logic again available, along with many answer types and the ability to turn responses of forms into tasks.

8

Customisability

8/10

Can customise quite a bit of the product, including custom fields, workflows, automation, reports, templates and types. However it's not open source which means that it may not offer the same amount of customisability as a tool which you can actually go ahead and tweak.

Ease of Setup
9

Ease of Setup

9/10

Offers a self-serve free trial and allows purchase without needing to talk to sales. Getting started and setting up a few tasks and subtasks should take 20-30 minutes, because it has a very rich library of templates. Full setup should take less than a day.

Ease of Setup

6/10

Offers a self-serve free trial and allows purchase without needing to talk to sales. Getting started and setting up a few tasks and subtasks should take 20-30 minutes, because it has a good sample project space, but it lacks a rich library of templates. Full setup should take a day or two at most.

Customer Support
9

Customer Support

9/10

Hive has great customer support personalised help is available both via email and on a live chat in app and responses are fast (<1 hour).

Self-serve materials also have great depth and quality. In particular, succinct video tutorials make discovering the platform a breeze.

5

Customer Support

5/10

Has tried to build a chat service but you can't actually ask many questions on it, since you normally just get template responses that a bot provides. It does however have an extensive set of FAQs and a project management guide which should help users get started.

Integratability
8

Integratability

8/10

Hive has integrations with most third parties of interest. Most notably, the across-app automations are available with such a large varied of third parties that Hive seamlessly integrates within your project management ecosystem.

Hive also has an API which allows teams to build custom integrations if needed.

5

Integratability

5/10

Supports a few integrations like Google, Outlook, Slack, JIRA and a host of other mobile applications. However, it doesn't support a few key integrations natively like Github, Zapier, Freshdesk and Zendesk which other tools do.

Ease of Migration
6

Ease of Migration

6/10

All reports can be exported to a pdf file. There is a large selection of self-serve analytics with great depth and quality (much of this is behind their most expensive tiers) but there are no custom reports.

5

Ease of Migration

5/10

Has robust options to make self-serve exports of data in excel, csv or pdf and also gives API access. However it doesn't have the same number of pre-built native integrations which other tools may offer
