Hotjar and Vercel Web Analytics serve distinctly different needs in the analytics space. Hotjar is the clear choice for teams requiring deep qualitative insights through advanced features like session recordings and heatmaps, making it ideal for UX researchers and product teams focused on understanding user behavior patterns.

Vercel Web Analytics, on the other hand, is better suited for Vercel-hosted websites needing basic web analytics without advanced behavioral tracking features. While both tools offer clean, well-designed interfaces, Hotjar's functionality depth makes it the more comprehensive choice for serious user behavior analysis.

Advantages of Hotjar

Hotjar is significantly better at session replay capabilities than Vercel Web Analytics
While Vercel Web Analytics lacks session replay functionality entirely, Hotjar excels with its intelligent session recording system that automatically categorizes user behaviors like rage clicks and u-turns. This is invaluable for UX teams needing to quickly identify and diagnose user friction points.
Hotjar offers superior heatmap visualization compared to Vercel Web Analytics
Unlike Vercel Web Analytics which has no heatmap capabilities, Hotjar provides comprehensive heatmaps showing clicks, moves, and scroll patterns with device-specific filtering. This is crucial for design teams needing to understand how users interact with different page elements.

Stackfix Verdict
Functionality
6

Functionality

6/10

Hotjar dominates in visual analytics with industry-leading heatmaps and session recordings. While purposely narrower than full-spectrum analytics platforms, its specialized tools for click/tap tracking, scroll depth, mouse movement, and rage clicks provide unmatched visual behavior insights. It's best used alongside a more quantitative, events centric tool.

3

Functionality

3/10

Vercel's native web analytics offering is very lightweight. It offers only the basics fundamentals of web analytics such as visitor counts, referral tracking and traffic segmentation data. You'll not find anything complex like heatmaps or session replay data here. Additionally, the tool is only usable if you host your site on Vercel.

Ease of Use
8

Ease of Use

8/10

Hotjar excels in user experience with an exceptionally intuitive interface that makes complex behavioral data accessible through visual representations. The tool requires virtually no training even for non-technical users, with self-explanatory visualizations and intelligent filtering options that simplify analysis.

7

Ease of Use

7/10

Given its limited feature set and beautiful design, Vercel Web Analytics is particularly easy to use. It would take an average SMB employee less than 20 minutes to master its use. Our only minor complaint is that unlike other apps, Vercels analytics offering is buried within its developer dashboard as opposed to being a dedicated separate app.

Look and feel
8

Look and feel

8/10

Hotjar's interface is clean, visually appealing and purpose-built for clarity. The design prioritizes visual understanding with intuitive heat overlays and user recordings that require minimal interpretation. Navigation is straightforward and focused, with remarkably fast load times (<1s) for heatmaps and smooth playback for session recordings.

8

Look and feel

8/10

Like most of Vercels products, its web analytics suite is superbly designed. It's interfaces are extremely refined and polished and page load times are very snappy (<1s).

Customisability
3

Customisability

3/10

While less customizable than comprehensive analytics platforms, its focused approach means most needed adjustments are readily available without overwhelming complexity.

3

Customisability

3/10

Beyond custom events, Vercel Web Analytics offers limited scope for customization. We would like to have seen more options to tweak the dashboard itself and change how data is visualized.

Ease of Setup
8

Ease of Setup

8/10

Hotjar offers remarkably simple implementation requiring only a single JavaScript snippet installation. The platform begins delivering valuable insights immediately after installation with no additional configuration required. Given the lack of functionality depth, there's little additional configuration needed.

8

Ease of Setup

8/10

Given its integration with Vercel, it's unsurprisingly extremely easy to setup if you're a Vercel user (you can't use it if you're not). We appreciated the self-serve free trial too for free users.

Customer Support
5

Customer Support

5/10

Hotjar's documentation is middle-of-the-road. We would have preferred a more developer centric layout instead of providing articles in a help centre format which can be harder to navigate. Beyond this, email support replies take 24-48 hours in our testing.

7

Customer Support

7/10

Vercels developer documentation is well laid out, easy to digest and detailed. It also offers very strong search functionality too. Additionally, it offers reliable help ticket and email support too which takes on average a day to get a response from in our testing.

Integratability
6

Integratability

6/10

Hotjar offers a number of native integrations with popular ticketing tools such as Jira/Linear, automation platforms like Zapier and analytics tools like Google Analytics/Mixpanel. It's integration range is somewhat limited when compared to larger, all-in-one product analytics tools though.

4

Integratability

4/10

From an analytics perspective, Vercel does offer an API to interact with data programatically. However, given the feature is still nascent, it offers little to nothing in terms of additional integrations.

Ease of Migration
6

Ease of Migration

6/10

Hotjar provides straightforward exports for heatmaps, recordings, and feedback data. Users can download recordings, export heatmap data as CSV files, and access feedback responses through the dashboard or API. While not as extensive as enterprise analytics platforms, the export capabilities align well with the qualitative nature of the data collected.

5

Ease of Migration

5/10

Vercel offers limited self-serve export functionality directly within its web app, as well as a limited API through which you can interact with data programatically.
