Workable and Lever serve distinctly different segments of the ATS market. Workable excels as a user-friendly, straightforward ATS best suited for small businesses with low hiring volumes (up to 2 open positions at a time) and basic recruitment needs. Its intuitive interface, quick learning curve, and extensive job board reach make it ideal for occasional hiring managers.

Lever, on the other hand, is better suited for mid-sized organizations with moderate to high hiring volumes (3-10 open positions) who need advanced automation, deeper functionality, and extensive integration capabilities. While Lever offers more sophisticated features, this comes at the cost of a steeper learning curve and more complex interface.

Advantages of Lever

Lever is significantly more customizable for candidate evaluation
We found Lever offers superior customization options for evaluating candidates, with the ability to create custom evaluation forms with multiple question types and flexible scoring options. In contrast, Workable limits users to just two types of evaluations with pre-defined questions, which can be restrictive for companies with specific assessment needs.
Lever offers better customer support
Lever provides exceptional customer support with rapid response times under 15 minutes, while Workable's support, though adequate, features less knowledgeable agents. This difference is particularly important for organizations that need reliable technical assistance during critical hiring periods.
Lever has more advanced workflow automation capabilities
Lever provides more sophisticated workflow automation features, allowing teams to create custom workflows for different hiring processes. While Workable only offers basic template-based automation, Lever enables custom triggers and actions that can significantly streamline recruiting operations for high-volume hiring teams.

Advantages of Workable

Workable's referral portal looks more professional

Workable actually provides a separate referral portal similar to a career page, with the caveat that you need to submit someone's CV as a hard requirement (likely for parsing). Great for bigger teams that heavily rely on referrals and where employees can share the referral portal more widely. Lever in turn doesn't offer a portal but just a survey-type form that collects some referral data and feeds into a candidate pool of your choosing.

Workable has other key native features that Lever is missing in-house

E.g. Workable has native TA tests, texting and sourcing tools from existing pre-searched candidate pools. With Lever you will have to find tools that integrates with it which will cost time and increase your SaaS spending.

Workable is significantly easier to use
We find Workable offers a gentler learning curve and more intuitive interface compared to Lever. An average SMB employee can master key functionalities within 30 minutes with minimal guidance, which is particularly valuable for organizations with occasional hiring needs or less technically savvy hiring managers.
Workable has superior job board reach

Workable integrates with 130+ job boards compared to Lever's 10, providing significantly broader reach for job postings. This makes Workable particularly valuable for companies needing to cast a wide net for talent or recruit across multiple geographical regions.

Workable offers better visual design
While neither platform excels in design, Workable's interface is notably more visually appealing than Lever's dated and overwhelming interface. This makes daily usage more pleasant for hiring teams, though Workable's page load times of 2 seconds are a minor drawback.

Lever is best for

  • Businesses with a high hiring volume (10+ positions open at a time)
  • Who need sophisticated workflow automation and customizable interview processes, like creating custom pipelines for each job opening
  • And/or who want extensive integration capabilities with 360+ tools including HRIS, assessments, and video platforms

Workable is best for

  • Businesses with a low hiring volume (< 2 open positions at a time)
  • Who need basic automation and standard customization options
  • Who want an affordable ATS with a good balance between functionality and ease of use

Lever is less good for

  • Businesses with a low hiring volume (<10 positions open at a time)
  • And/ or need advanced reporting capabilities
  • Who need a basic ATS without sophisticated workflow automation and customization options

Workable is less good for

  • Businesses with a moderate to high hiring volume (3+ open positions at a time)
  • Who need an ATS with even richer functionality, such as advanced automation, reporting and customization
  • And/or who need highly customizable candidate evaluation and scoring systems
