Smartsheet and Linear serve distinctly different needs in the project management space. Smartsheet excels as a highly customizable, data-intensive platform ideal for complex project management across diverse teams, offering superior time tracking, resource management, and multiple visualization options. It's best suited for larger organizations requiring detailed project tracking and cross-functional collaboration.

Linear, conversely, shines as a streamlined, user-friendly tool specifically designed for software development teams, offering superior ease of use and modern design but with intentionally limited customization. Choose Smartsheet for complex, data-heavy project management needs across diverse teams; choose Linear for focused software development project management where speed and simplicity are priorities.

Advantages of Linear

Linear is significantly more intuitive and user-friendly
Linear's keyboard-first approach and streamlined interface makes it exceptionally easy to use, with most workflows accessible via keyboard shortcuts. We found that new users can become proficient within 1-2 hours, whereas Smartsheet's spreadsheet-based interface requires several days of training. While Smartsheet offers more features, Linear's focus on core functionality makes it more accessible for teams that don't need complex spreadsheet capabilities.
Linear offers superior visual design and performance
Linear's modern, minimalist interface with elegant color coding and smooth transitions provides a much more pleasant user experience compared to Smartsheet's plain, spreadsheet-like interface. Page loads in Linear are consistently fast, while Smartsheet can have slower loading times, especially when creating new projects.
Linear provides better customer support
Linear's support team responds quickly (under 1 hour) with knowledgeable and helpful assistance. In contrast, Smartsheet's support can be slower, with in-app chat responses being unreliable and some features requiring paid training through 'Smartsheet University'.

Advantages of Smartsheet

Smartsheet is significantly more customizable for diverse team needs
We found Smartsheet's customization capabilities to be far superior, with extensive options for custom fields, forms, and workflow automation. Teams can create highly tailored solutions for their specific needs, unlike Linear's intentionally rigid structure. This is particularly valuable for cross-functional teams who need to track various data points and metrics.
Smartsheet offers superior time tracking and resource management
While Linear lacks native time tracking, Smartsheet provides comprehensive time and resource management features, including customizable tracking methods and expense monitoring. This makes it particularly valuable for teams that need to track billable hours or manage resource allocation across projects.
Smartsheet provides more comprehensive project visualization options
Smartsheet offers five different view types including Gantt, calendar, and timeline views, compared to Linear's limited board and list views. This flexibility in visualization is crucial for teams that need different perspectives on their project data, especially for complex project planning.
Smartsheet excels at form-based task creation and data collection
Smartsheet's form functionality is exceptional, offering highly customizable forms with conditional logic and various question types. Linear only offers basic task creation through Slack, making Smartsheet significantly better for teams that need to collect structured data or manage request workflows.

Functionality
6

Functionality

6/10

<p>Linear focuses on delivering exceptional functionality required for planning and building software products. including excellent product planning, cycling planning and issue tracking functionality. However, this means that compared to other PM tools, Linear lacks some common functionality, e.g. timeline/ Gantt view for tasks, adding custom fields, time-tracking, an automations module.</p>
8

Functionality

8/10

<p>Smartsheet has all the functionality that companies will need - including some more sophisticated functions required only my large companies. Smartsheet offers: excellent portfolio management features, cell history, strong automation and some nifty team capacity reporting features.</p>
Ease of Use
9

Ease of Use

9/10

<p>Using Linear is a delight. Its keyboard-first design allows you to breeze through workflows with ease—most actions, like creating a new task, are just a single shortcut away (press “C,” and you’re good to go). With its streamlined functionality, finding key information and navigating core workflows feels intuitive. Thanks to its smooth onboarding process, most startup employees can feel comfortable with the platform in just 1-2 hours, even with minimal guidance.</p><p>That said, Linear isn’t the most beginner-friendly tool. For users less familiar with keyboard shortcuts, it can feel a bit daunting at first. Plus, it offers fewer templates and less in-app guidance compared to alternatives like Asana or Monday, which might leave some teams wishing for a little more hand-holding.</p>
5

Ease of Use

5/10

<p>Smartsheet is designed to function in a similar way to a spreadsheet. If you are comfortable using these or have used them before, learning your way around Smartsheet will be easier. However, even if this is the case, processes can be a bit fiddley compared to other project management tools. We estimate that average start-up employee and would require a few days and some guidance before being able to use the product fluently.</p><p><br></p><p>Key information and processes are generally easy to find but not always easy to perform.</p>
Look and feel
9

Look and feel

9/10

<p>If you like modern, minimalist app designs with a touch of elegance, then you will love Linear. Every Linear page is beautifully laid-out and colour-coded, every interaction &amp; transition is silky smooth, and page loads are lightning fast.</p>
6

Look and feel

6/10

<p>Smartsheet lacks colour and is generally a bit plain to look at. That being said, the software is visually acceptable and for the most part has fast loading times (~1 second). When first creating a new project or workspace, loading times can be slower (upwards of 6 seconds) - but this is a one off occurrence.</p>
Customisability
4

Customisability

4/10

<p>Linear proudly admits that it is inflexible —and for good reason. They believe overly flexible software lets everyone create their own workflows, which eventually leads to chaos. For instance, you can’t add custom fields in Linear or build your own bespoke workflows. You’re also limited to just two task (or issue) views: board and list. It’s a “less is more” philosophy, designed to keep things simple and focused.</p>
8

Customisability

8/10

<p>Smartsheet has some very strong customisation features. The most impressive being their forms which are customisable in almost every way - from question type to, condition logic, to cosmetics etc. Automation is also nicely customisable with a vast array of action and trigger functions, as well as conditional logic available. Smartsheet could benefit from a few more task views - other similar project management tools offer far more!</p>
Ease of Setup
8

Ease of Setup

8/10

<p>Linear offers a self-serve free trial and lets you purchase directly—no need to deal with sales. If you're familiar with agile methodology, then setting up Linear should be a breeze since it anticipates everything you need, including sprints, Kanban board, and a backlog. You can get started with a project and a few tasks within 10-20 minutes, with full customization taking 1-2 hours.</p>
8

Ease of Setup

8/10

<p>Offers a self-serve free trial and allows purchase without needing to talk to sales. Getting started and setting up a few tasks and subtasks should take 20-30 minutes, because it has a very rich library of templates. Full setup should take a day or two at most.</p>
Customer Support
9

Customer Support

9/10

<p>Linear’s support team is easy to reach—you can submit a question directly in the app. When tested, their response time was impressive (under an hour), and the support agent was both knowledgeable and genuinely helpful.</p><p>The Linear team has also been open and responsive to feedback.</p>
6

Customer Support

6/10

<p>Personalised support is available via email and and in-app chat. The in-app chat feature is not something to rely on too much as responses are not always fast. Email agents are very accommodating, useful and fast (relies in less than 6 hours).&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><p>Self-serve materials are strong but not exceptional. They do not have 'how to's' for every feature. This is likely to drive traffic to their paid 'Smartsheet University' where they charge to teach you basic, intermediate and advanced functions in Smartsheet.&nbsp;</p>
Integratability
7

Integratability

7/10

<p>Linear might not boast the extensive list of integrations you’ll find with other project management tools, but it likely covers everything a tech startup needs for software development. The integrations it does offer are top-notch—high-quality and thoughtfully crafted. Plus, if you need something more specific, Linear provides an API for building custom integrations.</p>
7

Integratability

7/10

<p>Smartsheet offers integrations with most third-parties that companies will need. However, some notable exceptions are Notion, Github and Zendesk.</p><p><br></p><p>Smartsheet also offers can API that allows teams to build custom integrations where necessary.</p>
Ease of Migration
9

Ease of Migration

9/10

<p>Linear makes it easy to export all your key data—workspace, team members, projects, and tasks—directly into CSV format through a self-serve option. You can also export data via its analytics module or by integrating with Google Sheets. For anything else, Linear’s API has you covered, giving you full control over exporting additional data.</p>
8

Ease of Migration

8/10

<p>Key data and custom reports are available self-serve to export to a CSV file.</p>
