PS

Salesforce Sales Cloud and Zendesk Sell serve distinctly different market segments. Salesforce excels as an enterprise-grade CRM with unmatched customization, automation, and reporting capabilities, making it ideal for large organizations with complex sales processes and dedicated admin teams.

Its AI capabilities and integration ecosystem are industry-leading, though these come with significant complexity and steep learning curves. Zendesk Sell, conversely, is simpler, less powerful product, with its built-in prospecting tools, straightforward email sequences, and user-friendly calling features, making it better suited for smaller teams needing basic CRM functionality without extensive customization.

Advantages of Salesforce Sales Cloud

Salesforce offers substantially better reporting capabilities
While Zendesk Sell provides pre-built reports, Salesforce's reporting is best-in-class with native Tableau integration, offering the highest number of variables and visualization options. This is crucial for organizations needing deep insights into sales performance and customer behavior. Zendesk Sell doesn't even allow custom report creation.
Salesforce is significantly more powerful at workflow automation
We found Salesforce's automation capabilities to be vastly superior, with 13 settings tabs under 'Process Automation' alone, compared to Zendesk's single trigger option. This matters for enterprises looking to scale their sales operations efficiently, as Salesforce can automate virtually any workflow with ultimate flexibility.
Salesforce has superior AI capabilities
Salesforce's AI capabilities extend far beyond basic email writing, with features like Agentforce AI agents that can engage customers 24/7, answer product questions, and book meetings autonomously. Zendesk Sell lacks AI functionality entirely.
Salesforce offers unmatched customization potential
With Salesforce's Apex programming language, users can customize almost every aspect of the platform, from user interface to sales workflows and integrations. While Zendesk Sell offers basic customization, it's far more limited in scope and flexibility.

Advantages of Zendesk Sell

Zendesk Sell is significantly easier to use

While still not perfect, Zendesk Sell offers a more straightforward user experience compared to Salesforce's complex interface. This makes it particularly valuable for small to medium-sized businesses that need to get up and running quickly without extensive training. While Salesforce requires weeks to learn basic operations, Zendesk's simpler interface allows for faster adoption.

Zendesk Sell has built-in prospecting capabilities

Zendesk's built-in 'Reach' prospecting platform provides access to over 20M company profiles with advanced filtering options, eliminating the need for separate prospecting tools. Unlike Salesforce, which often requires additional integrations, Zendesk Sell offers this functionality out of the box.

Zendesk Sell offers better value with fewer add-ons required
While Salesforce requires numerous add-ons for basic functionality like SMS messaging and email sequences, Zendesk Sell includes more features in its base package. This makes it more cost-effective for businesses that don't want to manage multiple add-ons and integrations.

Salesforce Sales Cloud is best for

 • Businesses with a high volume of customer interactions (>100 messages/calls per day)
 • Who need advanced workflow automation, extensive customization capabilities and a high number of integrations
 • And who want best-in-class reporting and analytics capabilities
 • And can afford dedicated resources to maintain Salesforce

Zendesk Sell is best for

 • Businesses with a low volume of customer interactions (10-50 messages/calls per day)
 • Who need built-in prospecting capabilities and need to find leads without additional tools
 • And/or who want unified customer journey tracking and need seamless integration with Zendesk Suite

Salesforce Sales Cloud is less good for

 • Businesses with a low volume of customer interactions (<50 messages/calls per day)
 • Without dedicated Salesforce administrators or technical expertise
 • Or who seek an intuitive, out-of-the-box CRM solution

Zendesk Sell is less good for

 • Businesses with a moderate to high volume of customer interactions (>50 messages/calls per day)
 • Who need advanced workflow automation and marketing capabilities

Stackfix Verdict
Functionality
10

Functionality

10/10

Salesforce is one of the most powerful CRMs on the market. Its core functionality will be more than sufficient for most companies, and it also offers advanced capabilities that should satisfy even the most complex enterprises.

6

Functionality

6/10

Zendesk Sell offers a mix of advanced and basic features. On the plus side, it includes built-in prospecting and data enrichment, the ability to send texts and emails, make calls, and even create custom objects. However, its automation is extremely limited, with just one trigger available - you also can’t create custom reports, which feel like glaring omissions for a CRM.

Ease of Use
1

Ease of Use

1/10

Salesforce has the steepest learning curve and most complex user experience out of all CRM experiences. Built for large sales teams, everything (e.g. editing pipeline stages, adding an opportunity) takes longer to get done. There are foreign terms for technically proficient, power users everywhere, especially in the automations modules. Be prepared to invest weeks to learn the basic operations, and months to master the advanced features.

5

Ease of Use

5/10

Zendesk Sell is generally easy to set up and navigate, but there are frustrations. On the top of our list is how contacts and companies are stored in the same database. This means that when associating a contact with a deal, you’ll have to scroll through a disorganized list of both individuals and companies. Pages lack color coding, making them cluttered and difficult to scan for key information.

Look and feel
4

Look and feel

4/10

Even with the latest Salesforce Lightning, the user interface still feels cluttered and dated compared to newer CRMs out there—it’s definitely not a joy to use.

4

Look and feel

4/10

Zendesk Sell gets the job done but looks dull and uninspired. Some pages, like the automation and reporting modules, feel like unfinished prototypes. Page loads are another issue, with delays of up to five seconds

Customisability
10

Customisability

10/10

With Salesforce's Apex programming language, you can customise almost anything you can think of - from user interface, sales workflows to how Salesforce integrates with other software.

6

Customisability

6/10

Customization is another mixed bag. You can create custom objects, multiple pipelines, and custom fields, which is helpful. However, automation tools are severely limited, with just one trigger available for workflows. You also can’t create custom reports, which restricts flexibility.

Ease of Setup
1

Ease of Setup

1/10

Salesforce offers a self-serve free trial, but as an enterprise-focused platform, the initial setup is a lot more involved. Even the simplest configurations can take over 20 minutes, with basic tasks, like customizing pipeline stages, requiring more steps compared to other CRMs. Fully customizing and implementing Salesforce can take several months, and many teams end up hiring dedicated consultants or technical experts (at significant expense) to handle setup and data migration.

7

Ease of Setup

7/10

Close offers a free trial without need to speak to sales. Completing basic setup is simple, taking around 10 minutes to import contacts and set up pipelines. Due to Zendesk's limited customisability compared to more heavweight CRMs, fully setting up the platform is straightforward, and can be largely done within 1-2 business days.

Customer Support
4

Customer Support

4/10

Salesforce offers personalized Q&A through live chat, but it’s only available during business hours and often feels sales-y. We wish the coverage was greater and they held off on the upsell!

3

Customer Support

3/10

Customer support leaves a lot to be desired. The AI chatbot is often unhelpful or misleading, and attempts to connect with a human agent resulted in error messages on two separate occasions we were testing it. When connected to a human agent, the response is generic and forces you to go to a Help Centre article. Zendesk's Help Centre, while reasonably well-written, is not always easy to navigate.

Integratability
10

Integratability

10/10

Salesforce has the most extensive integration ecosystem of any CRM. It offers pre-built integrations with nearly all the key third-party tools and provides a robust API for building custom integrations.

8

Integratability

8/10

Zendesk Sell offers a very comprehensive library of pre-built integrations with many relevant third-party apps. It also has an API for custom integrations.

Ease of Migration
10

Ease of Migration

10/10

Salesforce allows users to export most data via self-serve or via an API. Exports of key data to relevant 3rd party vendors are also available via pre-built integrations.

9

Ease of Migration

9/10

Exporting data is easy. Contacts, deals and reports can all be exported via one click. Its API also allows you export any other necessary data.
