Key findings

Hive does the basics well. It has a very easy onboarding process, with strong customer support, self-serve materials, and Hive University (a centralized platform that teaches you how to use Hive), which means it is a breeze to learn how to use the platform. Key functions like automation, basic reporting, dependencies, and building projects are all easy to do and nicely customizable.

This being said, Hive definitely has weak points. For creative teams, there is no real-time collaborative workspace or the ability to create and collaborate on documents internally. Finally, many of Hive's best features - like automation - are only available in their more expensive tiers, making it unsuitable for teams with smaller budgets.

Feature available

Pros

Exceptional Customer Support
We found Hive's customer support to be outstanding, with rapid response times under one hour through both email and live chat. Their self-serve materials, particularly the video tutorials, make platform adoption seamless for new users.
Strong Integration Capabilities
We found Hive excels in third-party integrations, offering seamless connections with most major platforms. Their cross-app automation capabilities particularly stand out, allowing for sophisticated workflow creation across your entire tech stack.
Powerful Workflow Automation
We were impressed by Hive's automation capabilities. The platform offers an extensive selection of pre-built templates and allows for custom automation creation with conditional logic and diverse trigger functions across multiple apps.
Comprehensive Task Management
We tested Hive's task management features and found them robust, allowing for detailed customization including custom labels, status tracking, urgency marking, and template creation. The ability to track time and add dependencies enhances project oversight.

Feature unavailable

Cons

Basic subtask functionality
We found the subtask feature surprisingly limited - you can only add a title and deadline, with no ability to add descriptions or additional details. This makes it difficult for teams managing complex, nested task structures.
No internal documentation capabilities

We were disappointed by Hive's inability to create internal documentation and wikis. Teams must rely solely on Google Drive integration for documentation needs, which is problematic for organizations requiring secure, native documentation solutions.

Limited reporting customization
While Hive offers pre-built analytics, we found its reporting capabilities restrictive with no option for custom report creation. This limits teams' ability to track and analyze project data in ways specific to their needs.

Hive is best for

  • Businesses with a moderate number of active projects (5-10 projects at a time)
  • Who need sophisticated workflow automation across multiple apps and comprehensive time tracking
  • And/or who want easy onboarding with strong customer support and extensive self-serve training materials.

Hive is less good for

  • Businesses with a low number of active projects (3-5 projects at a time)
  • Who need real-time collaboration features and internal document creation capabilities
  • And/or who want advanced project management features but have limited budgets.
