Matomo positions itself as a more privacy friendly, open-source alternative to Google Analytics. It's principally a lightweight web analytics tool and not a fully-fledged product analytics tool. That being said, we were pleasantly surprised with its depth of functionality - even offering features such as heatmaps, scroll depth tracking and session replays. Our main complaint is that its interface and design is very dated when compared to the suite of modern web analytics tools on the market. It's best suited to teams with moderate traffic, looking for a web analytics product with some bonus features but who don't yet need a more complex product analytics tool.
