Key findings

Spellar falls short as an AI notetaker but shines as a tool for improving spoken English. It’s best suited for users looking to improve their pronunciation and grammar, with clear highlights and helpful insights. However, it lacks essential features for broader use, including keyword search, folder organization, custom templates, and manual note editing. This leaves users stuck with AI-generated summaries and makes it unsuitable for teams or users with more advanced needs.

Feature available

Pros

Excellent Performance Tracking

We found Spellar excels at providing detailed speaking performance metrics. It offers real-time feedback on talking speed and volume, plus comprehensive post-meeting analysis of English fluency, including accent, vocabulary, and filler word usage.

User-Friendly Mobile Recording

We were impressed by the mobile app's intuitive interface for recording in-person meetings. The one-touch recording start and seamless integration with the desktop app make it particularly convenient for users who need to capture meetings on the go.

Cons

Poor Core Functionality
During testing, we discovered Spellar lacks essential features like search capabilities, note organization, and editing tools. This severely limits its usefulness as an AI notetaker, particularly for teams needing to reference past meetings or maintain organized records.
Subpar Customer Support
Support infrastructure is inadequate, with no help center or in-app chat support. Users must rely solely on a Slack channel for assistance, which can be problematic for urgent issues or users needing comprehensive documentation.
Poor User Interface

The mandatory dark mode is difficult to read, and the lack of organizational tools like tags and search makes navigation frustrating.

Extremely Limited Customization
We found customization to be virtually non-existent. Users can't edit transcripts or notes manually, create custom templates, or organize meetings into folders. This makes it frustrating for teams needing to maintain specific note-taking formats or organizational structures.
Weak Integration Capabilities
We found the integration options to be severely limited. The absence of Zapier integration particularly hampers workflow automation possibilities, making it difficult for teams to connect Spellar with their existing tech stack.

Spellar is less good for

  • Businesses with teams that need to collaborate on and organize meeting content
